THE COMBINATION OF WIKI AND SOCIAL NETWORK TECHNOLOGIES TO A MODEL WEBSITE FOR A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION IN VIETNAM

Introduction and objectives: Vietnam is recognized as one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change. Its people should no doubt prepare for prevention and elimination of climate change-derived threats including public health problems. Behaviour change plays an important role of human engagement in the reactions to the threats. Since the lack of public understanding of climate change represents a significant barrier to public awareness, education is vital in raising public responsibility and attention. A nationwide platform for climate change education has been operated at national and institutional levels. However, a multidisciplinary approach has not been well introduced to Vietnamese students and junior scientists. Vietnamese Library of Science (VLOS) - a website in Vietnamese for Vietnamese has developed resources for health science and climate change education. The web is familiar to not only junior scientists and students but also communities. Development of a model: Wiki seems to be a more formal website and designed for collaboration than other social media. However, blog, twitter and facebook have gained increased favor of young generations in Vietnam. Taking the advantages, a wiki-based website was firstly developed in 2005 to call attention of Vietnamese scientists and students for contribution by writing and translating articles. Nuclear group members have been acting to sort and create categories. Different topics of health and environmental issues were opened leading to the categories of climate change and public health. With the concept “Links and Hyperlinks Shape A Multidisciplinary Approach”, specific terms are linked to full articles for explanations. To increase the interaction between participants, many applications of social media have been employed. The contents can be continuously created and corrected with comments and enjoyment.

Results and evaluation: Thousands of articles and document files in environmental and health sciences have been written and uploaded among about 55 thousand files and articles in total. Many topics and articles in public health and climate change have been re-introduced and cited by websites of schools, universities, research institutions and government organizations. Forty thousand members have registered. Each member can be a reader, a writer and an editor at the same time. In 2008, VLOS was chosen by Microsoft Vietnam for Creativity Award and Study Encouragement Award in the contest Nhan Tai Dat Viet (Vietnam Talents) – Prestigious IT Awards organized by Dan Tri News, VN Media and Vietnam Television. The website has recorded more than one million hits so far. The statistical numbers keep on getting bigger.

Conclusions and future plans: The cumulative advantages of wiki and social network technologies were taken to build VLOS as an online working table for writers and/or readers in health and environmental and other fields of sciences. The web contents have been enriched and popularly recognized and cited. The development strategies including workshops on the website improvement and online education on public health and climate change among others have been planned.
