Publius Ovidius Naso (20 tháng 3, 43 trước Công nguyên – 17 hoặc 18 sau Công nguyên), hay Ovid ở các nước nói tiếng Anh, là một nhà thơ La Mã nổi tiếng với các tác phẩm Heroides, Amores, và Ars Amatoria.

Ông đã viết tác phẩm Metamorphoses bằng tiếng Latin vào thời đại của hoàng đế La Mã Augustus, nhưng cũng chính Augustus là người trục xuất Ovid vì tác phẩm của ông bị gán mác ‘tục tĩu’. Tập thơ thiên anh hùng ca của Ovid chủ yếu kể lại các truyền thuyết Hy Lạp cổ, nhưng biến chúng thành những câu chuyện phù hợp với sự tinh tế của dân La Mã. Dưới tay những nhà thơ La Mã như Ovid, hay Virgil, những trò lố của các vị thần trở nên tục hơn, sốc hơn, hài hước và bi tráng hơn.

Ovid kể chuyện theo từng đoạn thơ, đa phần là về cuộc đời tình ái của Jupiter, vị thần chuyên hành động theo ham muốn, biến thành bò, thành mây, thành đống vàng để đánh lừa và cám dỗ các vị thần nữ. Ông kể về lòng dũng cảm của Perseus, dũng sĩ giết Medusa; và sự dại dột của Phaethon, người ráng lái xe ngựa chariot để kéo mặt trời lên. Ovid là tác giả thần thoại cổ mà những họa sĩ thuộc thời thế kỷ 16 và 17 rất yêu thích.
