ABSTRACT
Diaminosilane-functionalized cobalt spinel ferrite (CoFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles are synthesized and used as efficient heterogeneous base catalysts for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with malononitrile. The magnetic nanoparticle catalyst was characterized by XRD, TEM, TGA, FT-IR, nitrogen physisorption measurements. Quantitative conversion was achieved under mild conditions. Recovery of catalyst was facilely achieved by magnetic decantation. The supported catalyst could be reused five times without significant degradation in catalytic activity. No contribution from homogeneous catalysis of active amine species leaching into reaction solution was detected. The performance of the magnetic base catalyst in the Knoevenagel reaction was directly compared with diamine-functionalized SBA-15 as a typical porous silica catalyst. The magnetic base catalyst was also used in junction with acid polymer and supported platinum catalysts in multi-step, one-pot reactions with recovery of each individual catalyst.
