Abstract Traditionally the frequency power spectrum of heart rate variability (HRV) has been derived by taking R-R intervals, interpolating them to a regular sampling grid, and then evaluating the Fourier transform power. A problem with this method has been the attenuation of high frequency components. The Lomb-Scargle transform has been proposed to evaluate the frequency power spectrum directly. For long data series, the Lomb-Welch power transform has been proposed to yield regularly timed sets of spectral components. In this paper, we derive the complex- valued Lomb-Welch transform. The phase information can be used to research phase relationships between various spectral components of HRV.
