ABSTRACT
Micro flow reactors have been used as an alternative to conventional batch reactors for a number of industrially important carbon-carbon forming reactions catalysed by platinum group metals. Reactions have been carried out in conventional organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and methanol and also in supercritical carbon dioxide. We have shown in some cases that the use of micro catalytic reactors can give rise to rate enhancements of up to three orders of magnitude over stirred batch reactors. Solid phase esterification reactions have been attempted in these reactors, however the results demonstrate the limitations of some solid phase reagents.
